Pulmonary apoplexy
Pulmonary apoplexy, or apoplexy of the lung, meant sudden bleeding into the lung tissue, a 1800s term borrowed from apoplexy of the brain.
Webster's 1913 explains that apoplexy usually meant bleeding in the brain but was sometimes extended to bleeding into any organ, as in apoplexy of the lung.
IPUMS codes pulmonary apoplexy with pulmonary edema and congestion in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules.
