Rubeola
Rubeola is the medical name for measles, a very contagious viral disease that killed many children, often through pneumonia or other complications.
Measles brought fever, cough, runny nose, sore eyes and a spreading rash. Most children recovered, but complications such as pneumonia, diarrhea and brain inflammation could kill, especially the very young and poorly fed.
Do not confuse rubeola with rubella, the milder German measles. Clusters of child deaths from measles in a family or town point to an epidemic.
