Suppression of urine
Suppression of urine meant the kidneys had stopped making urine, a sign of kidney failure, as opposed to retention, where urine could not be passed.
Webster's 1913 defines suppression as the complete stoppage of a natural secretion, as suppression of urine, and contrasts it with retention, in which urine is made but held back.
IPUMS codes suppression of urine with other diseases of the kidneys in its scheme for the 1850 to 1880 mortality schedules. It usually led to uremia.
