Umbilical hemorrhage

Umbilical hemorrhage meant bleeding from a newborn's navel or cord stump, a cause of death in the first days of life.

The 1911 Census Bureau manual lists umbilical haemorrhage among other causes peculiar to early infancy, and IPUMS has a code for diseases of the umbilicus and injuries at birth.

The same manual says haemorrhage alone often hid the real cause, so the place of bleeding matters.
