Chapel of ease

A chapel of ease was a second church building within a parish, built so parishioners living far from the main church had a closer place to worship.

A chapel of ease was built to be more accessible to some parishioners than the main church, and it was served by the parish's own clergy rather than being a separate parish.

Baptisms or marriages at a chapel of ease may be entered in the register of the main parish church. A note such as at the upper chapel can help you place a family at one end of a large parish.
