Parish
A parish is a local church district or congregation under a priest or rector; in colonial Virginia and Maryland it was also a unit of local government.
In the Episcopal and Catholic churches the parish is the basic local unit, and its registers hold baptisms, marriages and burials. In colonial Virginia the parish vestry also collected a levy, cared for the poor and bound out orphans.
Pay close attention to parish boundaries at the time of the event, since parishes were divided and reshaped. Find out which parish covered your family's land in the year you need.
