Excluded

Excluded in church minutes means a member was put out of the church for an offense, the Baptist word for excommunication; many were later restored.

Baptist and other evangelical churches disciplined members for drunkenness, scandalous living, card playing, horse racing, dancing and similar offenses. If the member did not repent, the church excluded them; Baptist church rules of the time also call this excommunication.

Exclusion was church business, not a crime. Minutes often show the same person restored months or years later, and an exclusion can explain why someone drops out of a church's records.
