Local preacher
A local preacher was a Methodist layman licensed to preach near home while keeping his own trade, unlike the traveling preachers who rode circuits.
Methodism relied on lay preaching from its start. A local preacher was a layperson accredited to lead worship and preach, while the circuit minister had pastoral oversight and gave the sacraments.
Because a local preacher was a layman, a man called a local preacher in a church record or obituary may appear in the census under an ordinary trade. Do not expect to find him in lists of conference ministers.
As seen in a recordMethodist quarterly conference minutes, 1800s
Licensed as local preacher: Bro. Isaac Wolfe
