French words in old records · card G

âgé de

Âgé de means "aged" in French (âgée de for a woman); it introduces a person's age in years, as in âgé de trente ans.

Âgé de is followed by the number and ans, years, or mois, months, for babies. The ending agrees with the person: âgé for a man, âgée for a woman.

Ages in burial entries were often approximate and are frequently given with environ, about, as in âgé d'environ soixante ans. Treat such an age as an estimate and expect a birth several years either side of the arithmetic.
