French words in old records · card I

inhumé

Inhumé means "buried" in French; in a burial entry it states that the body was laid in the cemetery, often with the date of death.

Inhumé is the past participle of inhumer, to bury, a word used above all in official language; inhumée is the form for a woman. In a burial entry the priest writes nous avons inhumé, we have buried, often adding dans le cimetière de cette paroisse, in the parish cemetery.

Enterré, enseveli and mis en terre mean the same thing. Burial entries usually give the person's approximate age and the witnesses, and often little else.

As seen in a recordBurial entry in a Catholic parish register, Quebec, 1850s
Le douze mars mil huit cent cinquante, nous prêtre soussigné avons inhumé dans le cimetière de cette paroisse le corps de Césaire Boisjoli, décédé avant-hier
