décédé

Décédé means "died" or "deceased" in French; décès, death, is the word used in civil death records, the actes de décès.

Décédé is the past participle of décéder, a verb used mainly in legal, administrative and funeral language; décédée is the female form. French civil death records, actes de décès, were usually made within a day or two of the death and often give the age, birthplace and parents.

In a Catholic burial entry, décédé hier or décédé avant-hier gives the death a day or two before the burial. Calculate the death date from the burial date rather than assuming they are the same.
