French words in old records · card M

mineur

Mineur means "under legal age" in French records; fils mineur or fille mineure is a minor who needed a parent's or guardian's consent.

A mineur had not reached the age the law set for managing his own person and property, so a minor bride or groom needed a parent's consent, which French marriage papers may include. The age line moved over time, from about 25 in old France to 21 after 1792.

Mineur also means a miner, the worker in a mine, so check whether the word follows a name as an occupation or follows fils or fille as an age status.
