German words in old records · card A

Auswanderung

Auswanderung is German for "emigration"; an Auswanderer is an emigrant, and ausgewandert nach Amerika means "emigrated to America."

Emigration files and indexes in German archives are often headed Auswanderung, and a list of Auswanderer is a list of people who left. A pastor sometimes wrote ausgewandert, or nach Amerika, beside a name in the church book when a family left.

Do not confuse it with Einwanderung, immigration into a country. An American descendant is looking for the Auswanderung from the German side and the immigration or passenger records on the American side.
