German words in old records · card E

ehelich

Ehelich means "legitimate": a child born to a married couple. In a German baptism register it marks the child as born in wedlock.

Ehelich comes from Ehe, marriage. Baptism entries often state whether the child was ehelich or unehelich, and the short form ehel. is common. Eheleiblich means the same thing.

When a child is marked ehelich, the father is normally named, and you can look for the parents' marriage in the same parish before the birth. In other contexts ehelich simply means marital, as in eheliche Kinder, the children of a marriage.
