Proklamation

In German church books Proklamation means the banns: the public announcement of an intended marriage, made on three Sundays before the wedding.

Proklamation, also called Aufgebot or Verkündigung, announced a planned marriage so that anyone who knew of an obstacle, such as an existing marriage, could speak up. From the Council of Trent onward it was read on three Sundays or holy days in the parishes of both bride and groom, and Protestant churches kept the custom.

Marriage entries often list the three proclamation dates before the wedding date. If the bride came from another parish, her home parish may also have recorded the banns.
