proclamationes

Proclamationes, also banni or denuntiationes, are the banns: the public announcements in church of an upcoming marriage.

Before a church wedding the coming marriage was announced on three Sundays or feast days so anyone who knew of an obstacle could speak up. Latin registers call these announcements proclamationes, banni or denuntiationes.

A note like tribus proclamationibus praemissis (after three banns) is routine. A note that banns were dispensed may hint at a hurried wedding or a couple from different parishes.
