sponsalia

Sponsalia is Latin for betrothal or engagement, and in some registers it heads the record of the banns before a wedding.

Sponsalia means a betrothal, the formal promise to marry. Some parishes kept a separate book of sponsalia, recording engagements and the reading of the banns before the wedding itself.

A sponsalia entry may name the couple, their parents and witnesses even if the marriage took place in another parish. Look in the bride's parish for the wedding.
