Trauung

Trauung is German for a wedding or marriage ceremony; getraut (getr.) means "married," and a Trauregister is a marriage register.

Trauung is the act of marrying, from trauen, to marry a couple. Marriage registers are headed Trauungen or Getraute, and an entry usually gives the names of the bride and groom, often with ages, residence and parents, and the wedding date.

Other words for the same thing are Heirat (marriage), Ehe (marriage as a state), Verehelichung and the older copuliert. With civil marriage, introduced across the German Empire in 1876, the couple married at the Standesamt, and a church Trauung could follow.
