American Legion emblem

The American Legion emblem, a star in a wreath on a sunburst, on a grave or grave marker shows the person was a Legion member and a veteran.

The Legion's emblem has rays of the sun behind a wreath and a star marked U.S., inside rings carrying the words American Legion. The Legion explains the wreath as honoring comrades who died in service and the star as the victory symbol of World War I.

It appears on stones and on metal grave markers. It shows Legion membership and military service, which leads to the post's records and to service and draft records.
