Ivy

Ivy on a gravestone stands for friendship, faithfulness and immortality; it stays green and clings, like lasting love.

Ivy is evergreen and clings to whatever it grows on, so Victorians read it as friendship, fidelity and undying attachment, and like most cemetery plants, immortality. One Iowa study says it meant steadfast faith.

Carvers show it winding up columns, around crosses or over the edge of a tablet, as if growing on the stone, which suggests an eternal embrace.
