Open gates

Open gates, or gates ajar, on a gravestone stand for the entrance to heaven: the dead have passed from earth into the afterlife.

Gates carved standing open, often at the top of a stone or framing the inscription, show the passage from this life to the next. A National Park Service guide to Kentucky cemeteries reads them as entry into the glory of the afterlife.

Some guides add that the open gate lets the departed pass back and forth and watch over those left behind. The gates are a statement of hope, not a fact about the person.
