Certificate of landing
A certificate of landing (C.L.) certified the arrival record of an immigrant who came before June 30, 1906 and later applied to naturalize.
Certificates of arrival were issued only for people who came after June 29, 1906. When an earlier arrival needed the record checked, the government issued a certificate of landing instead, which served the same purpose, and charged no arrival fee.
On a passenger list, a verification note with an X between the district and file number, ending in C.L. or C/L, marks such a check. These notes date from 1926 or later, so they point to naturalization papers from those years.
