Deported

Deported on an immigration record means the person was sent out of the U.S., usually an arrival refused at the port and carried back by the shipping line.

Most deportations found with passenger lists are of arrivals a Board of Special Inquiry excluded. The transportation company that brought them had to take them back at its own expense. A Deported stamp may appear on the list, and the hearing list should give the ship and date of departure. A rare appeal to Washington could delay or reverse the order.

Deportation also reached people already living in the country. After 1924 the immigration service turned more of its staff to finding and removing aliens who had entered illegally, and in the 1930s to deporting criminal and subversive aliens.
