Naturalized

Naturalized means a foreign-born person became a U.S. citizen through the legal process of naturalization, usually by order of a court.

In records the word marks a foreign-born citizen, as opposed to an alien. Census returns may abbreviate it Na, and immigration inspectors wrote Nat., Natz. or USC, often with the court and certificate number, when a naturalized citizen came home from a trip abroad.

A note that someone was naturalized is a lead, not proof. A woman or child may have derived citizenship through a husband or parent and never had papers of their own. Look for the court and year so you can find the petition.
