illegitimus

Illegitimus is Latin for "illegitimate": a child born to parents who were not married to each other.

Illegitimus (feminine illegitima) marks a child born outside marriage. Usually only the mother is named, though some entries name a reputed father.

Look for a later marriage of the mother, since the father sometimes married her afterwards. A priest might add a note in the margin of the baptism when that happened.
