Legal and land terms · card A

Aforesaid

Aforesaid means "already mentioned"; "the county aforesaid" points back to the county named earlier in the same document.

Aforesaid is built from afore (before) and said. Legal writers used it to refer back to a person, place or thing already named, instead of repeating the full description.

In practice it is a pointer. "Jno. Hart aforesaid" means the same Jno. Hart named above. Follow it back to the first mention to get the full detail.

As seen in a recordDeed or bond, 1800s
Jno. Hart of the County of Bedford and State aforesaid, yeoman
