Deed

A deed is the written document that transfers ownership of land from one person (the grantor) to another (the grantee), usually recorded at the county.

A deed is the legal paper that passes title to land or other property. It names the grantor and grantee, describes the land, states the price or consideration and is signed, witnessed and acknowledged.

Most deeds were copied into the county deed books, and those copies are what you usually see. A deed can be the only surviving record that names a man's wife, heirs or former home county.
