Heir at law

An heir at law is a person entitled by law to inherit from someone who died without a will.

An heir at law (also heir-at-law) is someone who inherits because the law says so, not because a will names them. Each state set out who came first: usually the spouse and children, then parents, siblings and more distant kin.

Petitions to divide land often list all the heirs at law, including married daughters with their husbands and grandchildren of deceased children. These lists can rebuild a whole family.
