Release of dower

A release of dower is a wife's signed statement giving up her dower right in land her husband was selling.

Under dower law a wife had a future right to part of her husband's land if she outlived him. To give a buyer clear title, the wife usually signed the deed too, releasing that right; the clause or a separate paper is the release of dower.

A release is often the only place a wife's first name appears in land records. If a later deed shows a different wife, the first may have died in between.
