Vendue

A vendue is a public auction, the old word used for the sale of a dead person's goods by the executor or administrator.

Vendue is an older word for a public auction. Estates were often settled by selling household goods, livestock and tools at a vendue, and the administrator filed a sale bill listing every item, the buyer and the price.

Sale bills are worth reading line by line. Widows and grown children often bought family items, and the list of buyers gives you a snapshot of the neighborhood.
