1840 census of pensioners

The 1840 census of pensioners is the list of living military pensioners, with names, ages and places of residence, that marshals took with the 1840 federal census.

The 1840 census asked, among other questions, for pensioners for Revolutionary or military service. In 1841 the government published the names as A Census of Pensioners for Revolutionary or Military Services, giving each pensioner's name, age and place of residence as returned by the marshals of the judicial districts, arranged by state.

The 1840 population schedule names only the head of family on each line, so this list can be the only 1840 record that names an aged veteran living in another person's home. The Census Bureau has the whole 1841 book online.
