Consolidated lists

Consolidated lists were the Union's 1863 to 1865 draft enrollment registers, naming the men liable for the draft in each congressional district.

Under the Enrollment Act, men were enrolled and sorted into two classes. Class I held men aged 20 to 35 and unmarried men aged 35 to 45; Class II held everyone else. The lists record name, residence, age as of July 1, 1863, race, occupation, marital status, birthplace and sometimes remarks.

They name no family members and many are incomplete, but they can place a man who never served and left no pension file. They are arranged by congressional district, so find the district first; for a city, a directory and a map help.
