Enrolled

Enrolled, in militia and draft records, means a man's name was entered on the official list of those liable to serve; it does not prove he served.

Under the Militia Act of 1792, every free, able-bodied white male citizen from 18 to under 45 was to be enrolled in his state's militia. The Civil War Enrollment Act of 1863 did the same nationally for men aged 20 to 45, including immigrants who had declared their intent to become citizens.

Enrollment officers listed eligible men sub-district by sub-district, and the names were compiled into consolidated lists. Being enrolled made a man liable to be drafted, but many enrolled men never served, so an enrollment entry alone is not proof of military service.
