United Confederate Veterans

The United Confederate Veterans (U.C.V.) was the main association of former Confederate soldiers and sailors, founded in New Orleans in 1889.

The U.C.V. was formed on June 10, 1889, by merging many local veterans' groups. It was organized on military lines, with numbered local camps, and declared social, literary, historical and benevolent aims. At its height it had about 1,885 local camps and 160,000 members, and it declined after about 1903 as veterans died.

It was the Southern counterpart of the Grand Army of the Republic. A mention of U.C.V. membership in an obituary or county history points to Confederate service, worth checking in state pension files and service records.
