United Daughters of the Confederacy
The United Daughters of the Confederacy (U.D.C.) is a hereditary society for female descendants of Confederate soldiers, founded in Nashville in 1894.
Founded on September 10, 1894, as the National Association of the Daughters of the Confederacy, it soon took its present name. Its main early work was raising Confederate monuments, and historians tie it closely to the Lost Cause view of the war and to white supremacy. In 1899 it created the Southern Cross of Honor for Confederate veterans, first awarded in 1900.
It is a lineage society: members join through descent from a Confederate soldier, and its few "Real Daughters" were actual children of veterans.
