Wagoner
In army records a wagoner was the enlisted man in charge of a company's supply wagon, listed as a rank on Civil War volunteer rolls.
Civil War Volunteer infantry companies were authorized one wagoner besides the captain, lieutenants, sergeants, corporals, musicians and privates, and Volunteer artillery batteries had one as well.
During the war supply wagons were mostly gathered into trains run by regiments and higher commands, so a wagoner might work away from his own company. Outside the army, the same word in a census or directory simply names a civilian who drove a wagon.
