Rood

A rood is a quarter of an acre, or 40 square rods; old deeds give areas in acres, roods and perches.

Areas were often written in three parts: acres, roods and perches, where a perch here means a square rod. So 12 acres 3 roods 20 perches means 12 acres plus three quarters of an acre plus 20 square rods, or 12 7/8 acres.

The word rood could also mean the same length as a rod, 16 1/2 feet, in English provincial use, so read it with the rest of the description.

As seen in a recordDeed description, Pennsylvania, 1700s
containing 54 acres 3 roods and 12 perches
