pige

Pige is the old Dano-Norwegian spelling of pike, "girl" or "maid"; in records it can mean a girl, a young unmarried woman or a maidservant.

Modern Norwegian writes pike, and FamilySearch gives the meanings girl and maid. A pikebarn is a female child and a pikenavn a maiden name. In Danish, the language of most older Norwegian records, pige means a girl or young woman.

Because pige can also stand for a hired maid, check whether the person is listed with her own family or as a servant in another household. The male counterpart is dreng.
