sogn

A sogn is a parish: a district with its own church, usually one part of a larger prestegjeld served by the same priest.

Sogn is the Danish form of the Old Norse sókn, and modern Norwegian also writes sokn. Several sogn made up a prestegjeld, one as the main parish and the others as annexes, so one priest served several churches.

From 1837 to 1950 the sogn was also a unit of local government. In the 1891 census the municipality replaced the parish as the counting district.
