tjenestedreng

Tjenestedreng means a male servant or hired farmhand, a boy or young man working in another family's household.

FamilySearch translates tjenestedreng as a male servant or employee, and NAOB gives tjenestegutt, servant boy, as the equivalent. The word dreng alone can carry the same meaning.

Censuses list servants in the household where they served, with their age, marital status and occupation, so a young man may appear far from his parents' farm. From 1865 the census also gives the birthplace, which leads back to his home parish.
