Brewer
A brewer made beer or ale, either as a skilled worker in a brewery or as the owner of the business.
Beer is made by steeping grain, usually malted barley, in water, then fermenting the sweet liquid with yeast and flavoring it with hops. The brewer ran this process, through mashing, boiling, fermenting and conditioning.
Since the 1800s brewing has been a large industry in most Western countries. A maltster, who prepared the malted grain, practiced a related but separate trade.
