Coppersmith

A coppersmith hammered copper into kettles, pots, stills, boilers and other vessels, and repaired them.

Copper was easy to shape and good for vessels that were heated, so coppersmiths made cooking pots, wash boilers, brewing kettles and pipe work. Ships needed coppersmiths for fittings and sheathing.

The trade is close to that of the brazier, who worked brass, and the tinsmith, who worked tin plate, and the same man might do all three.

As seen in a recordOccupation column of the 1850 to 1880 census
Geo. Hunt, 39, Coppersmith, Mass.
