Exciseman
An exciseman collected excise taxes, the duties on goods made for sale at home, such as liquor and tobacco, and enforced the excise laws.
An excise is a tax charged when goods are made or sold within the country, unlike customs duties charged at the border. Excisemen visited distilleries, breweries and shops to measure goods and collect the tax.
The word is most common in British records. In the United States the same work was done by revenue officers and collectors.
