Gauger
A gauger was an official who measured the contents of casks of liquor, molasses or other liquids, usually so that duty could be charged.
Barrels were not all the same size, so customs and excise offices employed gaugers to measure each cask with a rod and work out its volume. The figure decided the tax owed.
Gaugers appear in customs house records, revenue records and port towns, alongside tide waiters and landwaiters.
