Gasfitter

A gasfitter installed and repaired gas pipes, fixtures and appliances, such as the gas lamps that lit homes and streets in the 1800s.

Wiktionary defines a gasfitter as a person who installs and services gas fixtures and appliances.

Gas lighting came to America in the early 1800s. Rembrandt Peale lit his museum in Baltimore with gas in 1816, and Baltimore became the first American city with gas street lights, lighting its first lamp in 1817. Every gas lamp and later gas stove needed pipes and fittings, which was the gasfitter's work.
