Ironmaster

An ironmaster owned or managed an ironworks, overseeing the furnace or forge and the many workers who made iron.

Early American ironworks were often large rural operations with a blast furnace or forge, woodcutters and charcoal makers, ore miners, teamsters and housing for workers. The ironmaster was the man in charge of the whole enterprise.

Do not confuse the title with an ordinary ironworker. An ironmaster in a record usually points to a family of means, which raises the chance of surviving business papers, deeds and probate files.
