Miner
A miner worked in a mine digging coal or ore; strictly it meant the man at the rock face, but loosely anyone working in a mine.
In the narrow sense a miner cut, blasted and loaded rock at the working face, while others hauled, sorted or timbered. In everyday use any mine worker could be called a miner.
The 1900 census told enumerators to separate coal miners from miners of ore and miners from quarrymen, and to name the ore. Later forms asked for the industry, giving entries such as miner, coal mine and laborer, coal mine.
