Roofer

A roofer laid and repaired roofs, using shingles, slate, tile, metal or tar and gravel.

Wiktionary defines a roofer as a craftsman who lays or repairs roofs. Roofers work with many materials, including wood shakes and shingles, asphalt shingles, clay and concrete tiles, slate, metal panels and, in some regions, thatch. The work is heavy and dangerous because of falls.

Roofing work also covers hoisting and storing materials, insulation and sheet metal. Older records may instead name a roofer by his material, so see also the slater, tiler and thatcher.
