Sealer of weights and measures

A sealer of weights and measures was a town or county officer who tested merchants' scales, weights and measures and stamped them as accurate.

The sealer kept official standard weights and measures and compared merchants' and millers' equipment against them. Accurate equipment got a seal or stamp; false equipment could be condemned.

It was one of many small local offices, and New England town meeting records often name the sealer each year. Elsewhere sealer can mean a seal hunter, so the context matters.
