Storekeeper

A storekeeper ran a shop, often a country general store, as owner or manager; on ships and in the army it meant the person in charge of stores.

In American usage a storekeeper kept a store, very often a general store in a rural area or small town that sold groceries, dry goods, hardware and other necessities to people from the town and surrounding farms.

A second sense is the person in charge of supplies, such as a naval or military storekeeper. In the census the word usually means the first, and the 1940 instructions list storekeeper among own-account workers or employers.
